Obtaining a residence permit in Russia

A foreign investor can start a business in the Russian Federation in several ways. They can establish (or register) a Russian legal entity in the form of a limited liability company, a joint-stock company (which can be private or public), or a partnership. Another option is to register a representative office or branch of a foreign company in Russia.

A limited liability company or private joint-stock company can be established by an individual (Russian or foreign) or a legal entity.

Tax regime

Tax regime

The Russian tax system generally employs moderate fixed or regressive tax rates. Individuals pay personal income tax (13%), land tax (0.3% of the cadastral value of the land plot, calculated using a specific formula), and transport tax (which depends on the vehicle's engine power).

Most businesses are eligible for simplified taxation and may choose between the following taxes: income tax (6%) or profit tax (15%).

Corporate taxes for medium and large businesses include profit tax (20%), value-added tax (ranging from 10% to 20%), property tax (0-2%), and several other specific taxes.

The Russian Federation has concluded international double taxation avoidance agreements with many countries, which should be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. The Russian Federation applies a 6-month permanent residence rule.
